The Akan people of Ghana used small carvings, called goldweights, to weigh gold dust. These were made of lost-wax cast bronze, brass or copper (i.e., in a mold that was used only once, so each piece was unique).

These goldweights reveal the tradition of the Akan people, its symbolically rich. They evoke proverbs, maxims and other historical stories. Also used as a vector of cultural transmission, the transition to adulthood was marked by the acquisition of goldweight: the father offered a small collection to his child.
